Arts news of the week (in 60 seconds)

HEADLINES FROM THE INDUSTRY THIS WEEK

BY JOHN GLOVER

This week, we look upon investigations that have now come to rest. We also saw some of our “best friends” enjoying music as much as we do…

…and GO!

IT’S DONE

The Metropolitan Opera has officially cut ties with former Music Director James Levine. Following a three month investigation, it was revealed that James was involved in decades of sexual harassment and abuse to artists and beyond. The Met has since terminated their 40-year relationship and has appointed Yannick Nézet-Séguin to take over James’ role immediately for their next season.

AFCM PROGRAM RELEASED

Get ready everyone; the Australian Festival of Chamber Music has announced its program for 2018, under the artistic direction of Kathryn Stott! Female composers and young artists will be showcased across this year’s festivities in Townsville, with the premieres of Australian and international works. In addition, 20-year-old violinist Grace Clifford will perform as the youngest ever artist at AFCM, alongside a number of emerging musicians from the Australian National Academy of Music. Young artists can also apply for the AFCM Winterschool Program. Queensland, you’ve got some deee-licious music ahead for you!

IN A GALAXY FAR, FAR AWAY…

Film composer extraordinaire John Williams has revealed that he will no longer write the music for Star Wars after the final movie in the sequel trilogy. With eight soundtracks for the franchise already under his belt, he will pass the baton on to another lucky artist. We hope that this isn’t the end; John’s influence on music is so pertinent across the past century and we hope to hear more of his work!

MORE BACH THAN BITE

A recent composition by Iain Jackson is on the spotlight this week after it was premiered at a dog show in the United Kingdom. A Dog’s Tale, performed by the Nero String Orchestra, was performed to an intimate audience of well-mannered pooches after the music was proven to relax their pulses by 22 percent. The doggos certainly seemed to enjoy the work as the music represented companionship, trust and some good old fun.

FEEL RESTED

Today is World Sleep Day! And the music world will celebrate as Max Richter’s marathon work Sleep becomes available to stream. Search for the composer in Spotify or Apple Music – and don’t forget to take a break from practice today to achieve some good shut-eye, too!
