Arts news of the week (in 60 seconds)

HEADLINES FROM THE INDUSTRY THIS WEEK

BY JOHN GLOVER

This week, we shine our spotlight on some talented and particularly brave artists….

…and GO!

CONGRATS, DAN!

Adelaidean composer and performer Daniel Thorpe has been selected as a Finalist in The Coffee Club Arts and Fashion Award for the SA Young Achiever Awards! Regarded for his experimental and genre-defying works, Dan has performed extensively over Australia, the United States, and Brazil; and has received various awards and arts grants. Good luck, Dan, we wish you all the best! (Did you also read the news about the other musicians nominated this year across the country?)

ARCO YOUNG MANNHEIM SYMPHONISTS

Applications for the Australian Romantic & Classical Orchestra’s Young Mannheim Symphonists Program in Sydney re-open! If you’re successful, you’ll get the chance to work with ARCO over four intensive days of rehearsals and tutorials, culminating in an epic performance of Mozart’s Haffner Symphony! Applications close on April 14, so get your applications and your video auditions in PRESTO!

OPERA STAR SHINES

Opera lovers are recommended to pencil 9 April into their diaries, as this is the day that Spanish mezzo-soprano Teresa Berganza will receive the Lifetime Achievement Award at the International Opera Awards! Teresa certainly has had an extraordinary career in the music world with stellar performances across the past half-a-century. John Allison, who chairs the selection panel, has said that it was “one of the jury’s easiest decisions” to give this award to Teresa, and this award cements her contribution as an unforgettable opera star of the 20th Century. Congrats, Teresa!

PERFORMANCE UNDER THE SPOTLIGHT

A professional flautist has made headlines this week as she played the flute while undergoing neurosurgery. After five decades experiencing a hereditary tremor, Anne Marie Whitlock Henry was given deep brain stimulation in hospital. In order to check that the treatment was effective, they required her to remain awake and use her hands in a familiar way. The treatment was successful and she has recovered smoothly following the surgery.

THE FUTUREMAKERS ARE HERE!

Musica Viva has announced its talented 2018-19 FutureMakers! Congratulations to pianist Aura Go and percussionist Matthias Schack-Arnott. These artists are about to embark on the two-year program to create an original project. Exciting stuff guys, can’t wait to see what you come up with (and you have big shoes to fill after Arcadia Winds took part in 2015-17!
