In 2020, Sydney’s Ensemble Apex presents its most ambitious season yet across three outstanding programs, and it’s seeking submissions of a new work by a young, emerging Australian composer. One work will be chosen for Ensemble Apex to perform in this 2020 season.
Composition brief:
A composition of 8-16 minutes’ length for an ensemble of any size and combination up to and including a modern symphony orchestra.*
Compositions featuring instruments outside of the orchestral family will be considered where suitable musicians can be reasonably sourced. The composition may utilise an instrumental or vocal soloist.**
The work must reflect Ensemble Apex’s key aesthetics of unparalleled energy and passion, commitment to serving and providing experiences for our audience, and excellence in performance.
- Only new works that have not been performed previously will be considered.
- Applications are open to any Australian composer between the ages of 18 and 30 as of 1 January, 2020.
- Submissions are due by 5pm, 1 August 2019
- Works must be submitted via the online Google Form here.
The successful composition will be chosen at the discretion of an Ensemble Apex orchestral committee put together specifically for this task.
The successful applicant will be contacted via email during October 2019. However, the announcement may not be made public until the Ensemble Apex season release in December 2019. Unsuccessful applicants will be contacted on October 20, 2019 and will be provided feedback where possible.

*Maximum – Triple Winds and Brass- Piano – Harp – 4 percussionists (incl. Timp). Electronics/Electronic instruments MAY be utilised.
** Where possible, the instrumental soloist will be sourced from the ranks of Ensemble Apex.
