EVENTS // The Spirit of Churaki and The Break

free event

An extraordinary line-up of legendary Australian musicians under the musical direction of Brian Ritchie will perform at HOTA this Saturday for The Spirit of Churaki and The Break. The event rides the perfect wave between rocking surf tunes, laid back oceanic beats, beautiful ballads and the ancient sounds of Aboriginal language, all accompanied by moving and evocative visuals.

Inspired by a heroic and largely unknown story, this concert honours Churaki, a Goodjingburra man known for carrying out daring rescues in the early 1900s as the surf bathing craze took hold on the Gold Coast’s southern beaches.

Starring an extraordinary line up of legendary Australian musicians under the musical direction of Brian Ritchie (Violent Femmes) and cultural collaborator Kyle Slabb (Banaam), this production is a musical collaboration united by the spirit of the surf. The Spirit of Churaki honours a rich lineage of saltwater people, a spirit of generosity, a deep connection to country and cultural obligation.

From the past to the present, this full night of entertainment closes with a cyclonic set by Australian surf rock legends, The Break featuring Rob Hirst, Jim Moginie, Martin Rotsey (Midnight Oil), and Jack Howard (Hunters & Collectors) and Brian Ritchie (Violent Femmes). The line-up includes Australian veteran of percussion Greg Sheehan, genre-traversing classical and electric violinist Veronique Serret, acclaimed bassist Sam Pankhurst, founder of QLD’s only Indigenous owned and operated record label Fred Leone, the soulful Colin Usher and the incredibly talented Slabb family who play across traditional percussion, bass, ukulele and vocals.

Commissioned, created and produced for Bleach* Festival as part of the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games, this proud local story returns for a special performance for the local community after it’s successful premiere in April at Surfers Paradise.
