GALLERY // How I designed new concert blacks

BY JACINDA JAENSCH AS TOLD TO CUTCOMMON

Earlier this year, we published a feature with Jacinda Jaensch – founder of new Australian fashion label Cadenza Apparel. Jacinda, like many in the music community, got over hunting for suitable concert blacks for her cellist daughter Lianah. So she designed her own. In this photoblog, Jacinda opens the doors for us to view the Cadenza Apparel journey – from the earliest designs through to the latest photoshoot (and the awkward and fun moments in between).

The pre-Cadenza life

When Lianah was in junior ensembles with North Sydney Youth Orchestra, the dress requirements were white tops, black bottoms. White tops were always so easy to find – but I had to put Lianah in a short black skirt with black leggings underneath, because I couldn’t find anything else for the bottoms. Other girls would do the same, just not with the tights underneath.

One particular outfit she was wearing, I bought from three different stores.

Thinking about change

These photos show the first sketches of ideas and designs, which started the Cadenza Apparel journey.

And the final designs – approved!

The product sample experience

Lace samples for the short sleeve top were sent with whatever colours the factory had available at the time – so most of the samples were white. It makes it difficult to picture what it would look like black, but we could use these to feel how scratchy or soft each sample was.

We ended up choosing sample B.

My embroidered logo was sampled on each of the fabric swatches I chose so I could see if the material would pucker, and also to see how the black thread matched the black material.

Samples were made and tried on. The tulip skirt sample was initially way too short. This was the skirt that gave us the most grief.

Final designs go into pre-production…

…and they’re here!

When the delivery guy showed up to my house with two pallets worth of these boxes for me, he got out of his truck, and in all seriousness, asked me: ‘Where’s your forklift?’

Thank goodness my husband was home and thank goodness we both are pretty fit, because we had to haul these boxes off the truck, one by one, to load them up into my house.

My thoughts were: ‘OMG. What have I done?!’

Wrapped and ready

These are the garment labels, care labels, and swing tag that I had designed.

I got to choose a little quote underneath the care instructions, so I chose the famous quote by Beethoven.

And the world loves them

So we decided to have fun with a new photoshoot
