Composer and pianist Kirsten Milenko (b.1993) is studying at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music. She creates sound worlds for acoustic and electroacoustic media, with inspiration stemming from contemporary and historical artefacts. In 2016, Kirsten was composer-in-residence with Sa Taronja in Mallorca, and studied on the Synthetis International Summer School for Composition in Poland.
Kirsten has had works performed in Australia and in Poland, Germany, France and Spain. She premiered De-Voir, a work for solo piano, at the Hamburg Staatsoper in 2017; a pas de trois choreographed by Hayley Page for the Young Choreographers series of the Hamburg Ballet. Other works include Rouge for prepared piano, premiered in Mallorca 2016; O for wind trio, premiered by the E-Mex Ensemble at the Palac Radziejowicze in Poland 2016; and Somniare for bass clarinet and piano in premiering in Warsaw, 2017.
Quero Apache Prayer.
Kirsten Milenko. Score for voices. From the composer: “The beautiful Quero Apache prayer translated into Latin and set to a chant to form a basis of inner peace”. This chant is inspired by Hildegard von Bingen, and in English it translates: “Looking behind I am filled with gratitude. Looking forward I am filled with vision. Looking upwards I am filled with strength. Looking within I discover peace”.
Kirsten Milenko. Score for solo piano. From the composer: “An early learning piece, this work was written for a student at a preliminary level. It is designed to strengthen each of the five fingers on the right hand while keeping a steady rhythm moving in the left”.
à l’aube. Kirsten Milenko. From the composer: “An analysis of light movement, this work traces the coming to life of the Australian wilderness at dawn as light begins to alter one’s sensory perceptions of time and space”.
