Arts news of the week (in 60 seconds)

HEADLINES FROM THE INDUSTRY THIS WEEK

BY JOHN GLOVER

This week, we are relieved to hear some promising news from our friends at Limelight Magazine. We also share a particularly controversial article, amongst some updates from our arts organisations and musicians.

…and GO!

CLOSE CALL

Following the concerns of liquidation earlier this month, an interested party has come forth to support the publication of the arts magazine Limelight. Though we don’t know much about the new company just yet, Limelight has confirmed that the March issue of the magazine is hitting the printers and distributed throughout the nation. It’s promising news for the magazine and for our community.

WAR ON MUSIC

Melbourne newspaper The Age has published a controversial article this week critiquing the Department of Defence’s spending on “a musical instrument shopping spree”. Sure enough, musicians and artists alike are outraged with the author’s discredit of music in the Defence Force. You can read composer and CutCommon contributor Christopher Healey’s response to the article here.

NEW RESIDENCY OPPORTUNITY

The Australia Council for the Arts has announced an exciting new residency program. The program will offer a successful applicant the chance to stay at the UKARIA Culture Centre, located in the Adelaide Hills, for up to 10 days and with cash support of $10,000. Applications for this new residency are open to all artistic teams until 20 April – get planning!

VIC OPERA WITH A NEW HOME!

The Victorian Opera will move into its new headquarters by the middle of 2018! The new home, 29 Laurens Street in North Melbourne, will offer rehearsal and performance spaces for the arts organisation. The space will herald the start of a new era for Victorian Opera – read more.

AUSSIE CONDUCTOR MAKING WAVES IN DENMARK

Our very own Australian conductor Nathan Aspinall has been chosen as one of 24 participants to compete in the Malko Competition for Young Conductors in April! Run by the Danish National Symphony Orchestra, it’ll set inspiring conductors to a fierce competition to win a lovely 20,000 Euros and a contract to perform with 25 symphony orchestras – WOW! With conducting positions and experiences with the Adelaide, Queensland, Sydney, Tasmanian, Atlanta, and Jacksonville Symphony Orchestras under his belt, its safe to say that Nathan definitely has a fighting chance!
