Virtuoso 2 with Matthew Fagan and Nicholas Young

Events in Carlton

Join one of Australia’s most captivating and versatile pianists and Young Steinway Artist Nicholas Young, and one of Australia’s finest exponents of the guitar – 10 String Spanish Classical Guitarist Matthew Fagan, for a concert of classical, Spanish, and jazz music at its emotive and technical best.

Be prepared for a fascinating combination of 10 String classical guitar with concert grand piano with stunning arrangements of Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony, Rodrigo’s Spanish guitar masterpiece Concierto De Aranjuez, excerpts from Concierto for Classical Guitar and Jazz Piano from Claude Bolling, and a unique interpretation of Issac Albeniz Asturias Leyenda combining the original piano score with a Flamenco guitar flavour.

Sydney-born, Melbourne-based pianist Nicholas Young completed his Bachelor studies in Sydney and Masters studies at the Universität Mozarteum Salzburg. As a Young Steinway Artist, Nicholas joins the celebrated community of today’s most acclaimed pianists and has enjoyed a diverse career as a solo, chamber and orchestral pianist. He has been a major prize winner of several national and international competitions, and has performed concerti with the Vienna International Orchestra and Adelaide, West Australian, Queensland and Willoughby Symphony Orchestras.

Selected repertoire in this concert program is featured on Matthew’s CD Virtuoso 2- A Homage to my Ancestors, which is the second recording in the project Virtuoso, a dedication to Matthew’s ancestors the Parkes family. Matthew has chosen piano repertoire to honour his grandfather, celebrated concert pianist Milton Parkes. Cecil and Kingsley (Milton’s brothers) were prodigious violinists who also played high level piano. Cecil and well known pianist May Broderick (Cecil’s wife) with cellist made up the Strad Trio and featured on Australian’s first music film produced by Frank Thring Senior from EFTEE productions. Cecil Parkes was a child prodigy violinist who toured with international star soprano Dame Nellie Melba performing in patriot concerts around Australia and toured the USA at the age of 13.

Nicholas Young will perform with Matthew Fagan.
